Default best camera for low light jazz clubs (B&W)

I am in the market for a SLR digital and am primarily interested in shooting Jazz musicians in clubs where lighting is not always great and use of a flash is out of the question. I have been told that the noise at the higher ASA ranges in the D1H is quite low. I would rather spend 2,399 for the S2, but if the d1H is superior and with less noise and artifact, I may have to spend the extra bucks. The Kodak 720 is a bit too much for my budget. ANY HELP IN THIS DECISION IS GREATLY APPRECIATED!!! - I am agaonizing over it.

Default Why not a D100?

Why not save some money and go for a D100? You'll still need some decent fast primes to do B&W low-light shooting. Stuff like the Nikkor 85/1.4 isn't cheap.
