Dear fellow digicam users. I feel I must share this one with you. I have been a lifelong Nikon fan - purchasing my firstFM2SLR at 16 and then purchasing my first digital camera some 22 years later i.e. the Coolpix 885.

Well what a mistake that was, the lens got stuck after just a few weeks, software errors occurred frequently and hot pixels steadily increased. The retailer I purchased from fobbed me off and Nikon want to charge the cost ofa new camera for the repair. Finally, after just 2 years of pretty awful, unreliable service the thing died completely as the iris stuck.

Having trawled the Internet, there is a clear pattern. This model has an appalling track record and clearly shows design faults. Here in the UK, products like this have to be of merchandisable quality in the first instancefor companies like Nikon to work to warranty deadlines.

Nikon's attitude with regard to any reasonable recompense or after sales service has been atrocious - arrogantly issuing their own dictates when offering solutions. Well, I'm not going to sit and watch Nikon laugh at people who have spent a small fortune on their poor products.

If anyone has any similar stories they'd like me to catalogue in a report I'm sending to Nikon UK, then please contact me at ian@usts.co.uk

Best wishes

L I Galloway (Ian)

Hello Ian,

read your post recently re Coolpix 885 iris freeze. Mine has worked well for 4 years with literally thousands of shot taken (work camera) and Iris has frozen. No error message just inop iris. How did yours fail? Did you get it fixed or move on?

All the best,
