I presently have a Cool Pix 5000 5 megapixel camera and I am thinking of upgrading. Based on reviews I've read, my top choices for the approx $1,000 price range are the 8 megapixel Coolpix 8700 and the 6 megapixel Nikon D70. I've just replaced my Canon S900 printer with the Canon i9900, so my principal purpuse for upgrading is to get into higher resolution, sharper & larger prints.

I've been told that because of the larger sensor in the D70 I will get a significantly sharper, cleaner and less pixalated and overall better picture with the D70, notwithstanding the fact that the D70 is 6 mp compared to the 8700 8mp. I've also been told hat I can do much more significant cropping and enlarging with the D70.

Obviously, the D70 is much larger so I don't know that it can replace the ease of use ofmy Coolpix 5000. I've also been told that I'll be hardpressed to see much difference in quality between my 5000 and the 8700.

I'm inclined to just keep the 5000 and purchase the D70. Any thoughts? Suggestions/

The 8mp cameras are just not worth it as the images are not any improvement as far as i can tell so wait a few months as i think there are a few dslr's coming out at end of year and they should be lighter and smaller then the bulky D70. Keep your Nikon for now and wait....or you might regret it
