Can anyone please tell me which brands to avoid at all cost. Whetherit be lens, filters, extended flash, etc.

I have a Coolpix 5700 I'm looking to get some additional items for. I notice there appear to be better lens out there than Nikon makes for this camera. The question is, do they work & how well.

Also, what's the deal with filters? Especially Gelatin filters... are these any good or what? Are they basically generic?

Is there a difference with power adapters or extended flashes?

Speaking about flashes IMO it's best to stick with a flash from the manufacturer of your camera. Nikon makes very good units. About lens atttachments, you cannot go wrong with the same brand attachments either. In Europe at least, Hoya is the biggest and most popular threaded filter manufacurer. Their HMC series filters are quite good at a reasonable price. One can pay more and get even better quality, but I doubt that the end result will make any difference.
