With Nikon now offering a 200 rebate on the 8700, it puts it down to the $550 range, similar to the Fuji S7000 (and other cameras in that range, such as DiMage Z3, PowerShot S60, and even the Kodak EasyShare 7590).

I was seriously considering the S7000, but the high compression on the 6 MP mode makes me nervous, based on what I've read. I like some of the features of the 8700, like the flip-out LCD screen. However, what I really want to know is with the 8700 will I get a better picture quality at 6 MP than the S7000?

I do like the "unlimited" 30 fps movie mode of the Fuji, which I understand is limited to 35s on the Nikon.

Do either of these companies come out with firmware upgrades to add features/capabiliites to their cameras?
