I have an Olympus E-300 dSLR and am unable to operate the manual focus function. When I turn the focus ring, nothing happens. Are there any reasons for this happening? I suspect a fault with the camera, however would first like to rule out operator error. Any suggestions?

You didn't mention if the manual focusing previously worked or if this was the first time you have tried it. I shall assume the latter...

Are you sure you are using a mode that allows manual focusing (e.g., P, A, S, or M)?

Did you set one of the manual focus options in the menu?

Are you sure the lens is properly locked into position?

If you have the focus mode set to AF+MF, the focusing ring only works when you half-press the shutter release. If you have the focus mode set to MF, then the focus ring will work without half-pressing the shutter release.

Also note the focus ring is speed sensitive...if you turn it slowly the lens will crawl, but if you turn it quickly the lens will jump.
