For longer exposures, more than a second, you should have noise reduction turned on...this takes a second exposure (with the shutter closed) in order to sample the noise level at the long exposure, and then subtract that noise from the image.

Note that this makes the exposure twice as long, and some features won't be available while noise reduction is turned on (like sequential shooting).
