My parents visited Poland and Russia, back when it was still the Soviet Union, and they said the same thing you said (about Russia; they thought Poland was great). They wouldn't go back - too depressing, people not very friendly, etc. So I think it's sad that it doesn't seem to have changed for the better. Not surprising though - it was a dictatorship then and it still is one now.

It's actually a deeply corrupt society, and that permeates all levels of society and all activities. There's no way I could live there.
