....hey James & RA, thanks for the remarks. I intended to send another photo, of the underside showing the feeding tube.

For any who don't know, the cicada has no mouth parts so its food intake consist of what it can get via the straw like feeding tube which for the adult cicada means moisture and watery sap from trees and small plants.

So, this has always had me wondering just what food does the cicada consume while spending all those 13-17-years underground before emerging and going direct to the nearest tree.

Nature is so fascinating, for instance bats, monarch butterflies, newly hatched turtles and the cicada among so many other critters with amazing natural instincts.

...here is the cicada underside from yesterday's 'cicada-shoot" which BTW had gray compound eyes. I believe I've read that the primary eyes are always read as seen above with the compound eyes possibly gray, white, blue or red.
