I can understand that Colb was pretty suprised to find that this expensive technique is still in a 'larva' phase even with better models.

I repeat what already has been said many times; It is strange that top camera manufactures, build cameras with tiny or no optical viewfinder. Yes, the latest trend, electronic viewfinder is the summum of making blind cameras; They don't work in dark situations either and just waste battery power.

Placing a flimsy ring on top of the camera may aid in dark or too bright situations.

If nothing helps to see what you are shooting; No matter how great the camera, it will not work to compose a picture. In such case I would swap it for a digital camera with best optical viewfinder.
