I was thinking of purchasing the Olympus Stylus 840. In reading various reviews, I read that it was "Weatherproof". I wanted something I could take to the beach and get a little wet in the rain. The salesperson at Best Buy said that it was not weatherproof and the packaging and their website did not indicate that it was. I was going to purchase an extended warrenty buy I do not want the camera if it fails because of moisture and the warrenty would not cover it. Does anyone know if it indicates anywhere that it is weatherproof?
Thanks, Karen |

The 820 model that I got from newegg.co,says on the box and the camera that it is weatherproof. It can go out in tghe rain but need to be wiped off before you retract the lens into the body.
I did test it at a fore last week with water spoarying around and it held up just find. Carried a cloth with me to wipe it off before I put it away. Never seen the 830, 840 or 850 so I can't say for sure. Check bhphotovide.com web site for the best info on the 840 model and see what they say. I do know for a fact that the 820 is not waterproof as you can't take it under water but the rain doesn't bother it. dave |

I can't find the 830 around here, I can't order as I need the camera in a few days for vacation. I can only find the 840. I did find the 820 at Sam's Club but reviews I had read were not as good. Does anyone have the 820, how is the picture quality?
Thanks, Karen |

Both http://www.buydig.com (part of beach camera) and http://www.bhphotovideo.com show stock on it, and these vendors have a pretty good reputation. If you order early today and pay for overnight shipping, you'd probably have it tomorrow (but, I wouldn't wait too long to order if you go that route, since you'd want to increase the odds that the vendor has time to process your order and ship it today. ;-)

I just noticed that circuitcity.com has it on sale for $169.99 now. So, you may want to call your local Circuit City (if you have one in your area) and see if they stock it.

Look here to see the image quality for yourself:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_...0_samples.html http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_...0_samples.html Quality is going to be similar to the 830, if not the same, because the two share the same 8-megapixel imager and 5x lens. If you want weather resistance, in a rugged little compact, I think the 820/830 will serve you well. |

Thanks for all the info. I bought the 820, but it's going back. The image quality was not good. My old 3.2 Canon PowerShot A70 pics are much better.
