Default C-4040 vs. c-5000

We're about to purchase our first digicam, and my boyfriend's dad has the Olympus Camedia C-4040, which we love. In looking for one online we ran into the C-5000, which seems like it would be a better camera due to it's higher megapixels, but it is also a good deal cheaper. I was wondering if anyone could compare the two for me in layman's terms, explaining why the newer C-5000 is a good $200-$300 cheaper. Or if you have one of these cameras and want to tell me why you do/ don't like it, that would be GREAT! I REALLY appreciate any help at all!

Much thanks,

I recently purchased the C5000 after my C4000 stopped working (bad CCD). The biggest negative for the C5000 is the AF is not great in low light situations and the noise levels above iso 160 are too high. The 4040 has a faster lens and uses smartmedia, which tops out at 128MB. The C5000 uses the newer xD format, but has a slower lens. The xD cards comes in sized up to 512 MB.

The C5000 does come with a hot shoe for an external flash. I purhcased the FL-20 Olympus external flash, which IMHO makes a big difference for indoor shots. The flash is quite pricey (lists for $199, but I bought mine for $120 at newegg.com).

The fact that the C5000 has more megapixels does not necessarily make this a better camera. The higher megapixels lows me to do cropping without losing too mcuh resolution. I don't belive the 4040 is in production any more, but you can find used and refurbished units on ebay.

Default What about the C-5060 Wide Zoom ?

I just got back from "test driving" the new Olympus C-5060 Wide Zoom and all I can say is WOW!!!! It's gorgeous and feels just right in my hands. Plus:

- 5.1 MP
- 27-110 (35mm equivalent)
- Hot Shoe
- xD and CF card slots
- Vari-angle LCD
- Excellent battery life

Check out the review on Imaging-Resource:

All I can say is try before you buy!

I own the C4040 camera and do not think that the C5000 would be an upgrade. The C4040 has a better lens and performs very well. Picture quality is great. I would consider the C5050 as an upgrade.

Hi, I would get the 4040,especially since you have tried it and really like the camera. More megapixels do not necessarily mean better quality pictures, at least from my limited experience.

I'd vote for the 4040 also. The 5000 is squarely aimed at the amateur "big box" consumer. It appears to have a cheaper build.
The 2000, 3000 and 4000 series Oly's are a great line.
The 5050/5060 are the current flagships of this series, but I don't think they're necessary considerations for you.
