Default Can't Focus Using macro Setting on C-7000

Hi, I got a Olympus C-7000 zoom 7.1 mp camera and i'm trying to take pictures of some coins using macro mode (flower symbol). The camera is set for spot metering and auto focus using spot metering but I can't get the image to almost fill the LCD screen. When shooting at a distance of around 8" the coin only fills about 10% of the image. When I use ultra close function (flower symbol w/ "s") I can't get the camera to autofocus.

Check out pg 36 of the manual http://manualnguide.com/dl/3000/ it should answer this as AF is going to struggle it says use manual focus.

I had it set on manual focus but it was hard to focus. Before I try manual again I'd like to try the auto focus if possible.
Before trying manual again.

"focusing is usually slow when you get close to a subject. However in macro mode focusing is performed quickly"
How can I assure I'm in macro mode?

I've read page 36 of my Advanced Manual several times bit I guess I'm missing something.
The camera is set on AF spot and AE spot. Along the left side of the LCD screen sometimes a row of measurements will appear. This morning they were in inches. After turning the camera off the back on they are gone. Right now it's not there.
Across the top of the LCD screen is A 2.5" the F8.0 - 1.7
lower on the left side is the S flower symbol.

Is anything set on manual configuration?

I haven't tried to take a picture this morning.
