Default 750 and auto focus lamps?

In low light conditions I use the flash on my new Olympus 750, but often (especially for quick snaps) I get a perfectly exposed but out of focus picture. So I was wondering what do the auto focus lamps on other cameras do? Are they just like a small torch/flash light pointing in the same direction as the lens? I understand that the Olympus flash units (e.g. FL-40) have autofocus lamps but is it possible to get just an add on autofocus lamp?
Sorry if this is a really stupid question  - Iím new to autofocus cameras.
