Default Flash auto exposure

I took a few test shots at my local dealer and the flash exposed the person centered in the picture fine. The flash did dominate the exposure though, so the lighting was a little flat on the centered person and the backround ambient lighting was too dark. Can the 5050 flash exposure be adjusted or manually controlled to provide less light to the main subject centered in the photo and allow more of the ambient light in the room to illuminate the subject and backround? If it can how is it done? Thanks for your help.

The intensity of the flash in the 5050 can manually adjusted just like in other Oly digitals by going to the flash intensity menu and selecting more or less in small increments up to +/-2.

You can decrease flash output by doing what Mike_PEAT described, and also switching the flash mode to 2nd-Curtain, which will use whatever shutter speed you choose (slower shutter speeds would be necessary) to gather more light prior to firing the flash. That way background lights and or details can be captured too
