Default slow focus time on D40

I was recently at a party with my trusty D40 and a friend of mine brought his Canon PowerShot A40...we were comparing the cameras by taking pictures of the same things and looking at the final outputs when I suddenly felt completely humiliated!

When we aimed the camera at the object and pushed the exposure button, his camera focused and took the picture considerably faster than mine...I would say at least 1-2 seconds faster... Is this normal?? Why would his camera be able to focus/shoot that much faster?

Neither of us pushed the exposure button down half-way to pre-focus...we were testing it from the "unfocused" state..

any help would be appreciated.
