Since this thread is still going...

Lately, I've been using mostly SimplyMEPIS 8.0 Release Candidate 2 (free) as my primary desktop. It's got loads of applications built in (including Firefox, Open Office Writer, and much more), with many thousands of other free applications available with a mouse click or two. It's using Debian Lenny as it's core (Lenny is the current testing version of Debian, a popular Linux distribution), which should go to a final release status in approximately 1 week. So, the final version of SimplyMEPIS 8.0 should be very soon, too. Here's a Mepis community web site where you can get more info about this free operating system.

http://www.mepiscommunity.org/

Here's a screen capture of my current desktop running the 64 bit version of SimplyMEPIS 8.0 RC2 (using the default wallpaper) with digiKam running, which a super open source application for image management:

IOW, I rarely use photos for my desktop wallpaper. Besides, I really like the community developed wallpaper that's going to be used by default in the upcoming MEPIS 8.0 release. :-)

I haven't bothered to change my Vista desktop's wallpaper from it's defaults either. Vista is installed on this PC, too. I just don't use Vista very much.

Here's my Vista Desktop (I've got my PC setup with multiple operating systems in separate partitions). This wallpaper is just the default wallpaper installed by Dell with Vista on this PC. The default MEPIS 8.0 desktop wallpaper is much better than the default wallpaper used by Dell in this case. The Dell installed wallpaper is tolerable to my eyes (better than most), although I think the default MEPIS 8.0 wallpaper is better, allowing more contrast between icon text and background colors.

I like to change my wallpaper every few weeks, but on the whole I like something that feels restful.

Here's my latest one - the view from lower end of Buchart Gardens looking up the Saanich Inlet.

The shaded parts of the original picture were very dark. I tried using a couple of HRD programs to improve the detail in the near-black shadows, but I couldn't manage to retain the right colours in the highlighted area. So I used Photoshop Elements 2 instead & while it took rather longer, I liked its result much better.
