Joshua,

Personally I prefer the first shot with the greater detail in the apparatus, and the blurred motion of the riders' chairs.

The second looked too much like a psychedelic mushroom. My reaction is probably idiosyncratic.

You're really into rides... I've left too many thunmbprints in the few I've ridden with my kids. I'm chicken at heart when it comes to rides.

I like both of them even though I'm for the psychedelic mushroom

Two things :
1) The psychedelic mushroom : what a pity for the cropped part on top.
2) It's nice that u have reported shot data.
If u look at the subject distance values two things arise :
2a) The psychedelic mushroom once again. 3,48m : looks like u focused on the gate.
2b) The first one says 2.06 : maybe u were near the gate and then pointed upwards ?

The autofocus could have very well focussed on the gate. I was in two different places at different times of the night when I took those two pictures. I think the first pic was hand held. Glad you like the mushroom. That session was my first time taking pictures of this kind. Maybe tonight I will post another from the session with shorter shutter time but the whole mushroom.
