I went to the Oregon State Fair last night and spent quite a bit of time taking night shots in the midway. Here are a few of the better ones. Nikon D100, Sigma 28-70mm lens. Most exposures are at a shutter speed of 1 second.

The first shot is of a ride I call "Twister on drugs!.

The next three shots are of a large ferris wheel. The "Aztec" effect in the second is caused by the rotation of the wheel and the sequencing of the lights on the spokes.

The last shot is a different wheel.

The static one does nothing for me. But the ones with motion, wow! Stunning. You've inspired me with them. I'd really like to have a go myself one day. Thank you.

Dare I ask? Tripod or hand-held?

Ferny, yes, definitely a tripod! In addition, since I was using very slow shutter speeds, I used the self-timer to allow all vibration to stop. The ten second delay created a real challenge since the subject was moving and the light pattern constantly changing.

Here is a shot that was intentionally hand-held for effect. I pressed the shutter release and panned right while the shutter was open. The subject is two tall lighted poles supporting a bungee ride (not for me!). I think the effect is someshat spectacular!

These are absolutly fantastic esp the ones in motion! 1 & 3 are my favorites along with the last bungee ride. Very spectacular. Great Job Cal!
