Hi folks;

I've wanted to do a series called Tools of the Trade. My regular job is that of a school teacher. When I'm not in the classroom, (or taking pictures) I can usually be found working with Theatre Alive, a local amateur company. I usually get to rehearsal about an hour before the rest of the cast, so I brought my camera along this last Monday.

Here are a couple of shots I like.

I'm reminded of an oldsong by Canadian David Bradstreet, which begins:

"Stuck here in this little room, with the tricks of my trade...."

Regards,

Tom, on Point Pelee, Canada

The rehearsal hall is large, and spacious and really poorly lit...

Nice shots. In the first one, I am trying to figure out the background. It looks like the cover over a tympani or a grand piano. I am assuming that the second and third are of an electronic piano or a modern player piano (e.g. acoustic piano with electic/electronic player action). I am still trying to decide if I like the light reflection on the F# and G# in the third shot. One side of me likes it and the other side does not.

Hi Cal;

The background in the first shot is a piece of material I stole from Costumes. It acts as a dust cover for the electric piano when I'm toobusy (lazy) to put it in its case. The cloth has a nice sparkle to it.

One half of me wanted to clone out hte highlights on the piano keys, but to be honest, by then I had decided to re-do the entire shoot when I have a better flash system. (I've got a Metz 36-C2 on my Christmas list) The reflection is from a side light I had to put about one foot from the keyboard to get any reasonable exposure.

Thanks for your comments.

Here's another from the same series. This, a macro shot. The background is a page from the Evita! score.
