Yes of course, the zoom is used. Regardless of the zoom the working distance is abt the same.

I shoot at abt x12 and zoom out sometimes if needed to abt x8 or there abt.

Stay at the same distance from your subject and zoom in and see what happens. Keep it in focus. I often use highest zoom 12x (my FZ5) for macros especially when using the Raynox 150 but with the 250 it is limited in DOF (Depth Of Field) although with good light you can get some nice photos with the 250.

ps...I am assuming you didn't mean digital zoom as you don't really want to use that as it simply crops your subject and you lose detail.
