Default Who uses AF Assist Lamp for wildlife-outdoors

Does anyone use the AF Assist lamp for outdoors wildlife shots?

If you are photographing a bird outdoors will the AF assist lamp even work or will it just scare away the wildlife?

I have only used it indoors in low light.

I guess you'd only know by trial and error, but by then you may have missed the shot. Most probably a bight red light would scare them off!

The FZ38 can focus in almost total darkness without the assist lamp. Just look for something with some contrast at a similar distance to the bird, then lock the focus with the AE lock button (or a half shutter press) and recompose. Practise in a darkened room you'll see what I mean.

I'm sure a lot depends on how close you are too. Don't expect an AF assist lamp to do much from 40 yards away.
