how would I be able to, for instance, take a photo of a bottle of milk on a table, in which the end of the table is blurred / bokeh-ed ?

I did a kitchen bench shot (of ingredients for a salmon-head stock):
FZ40 Stock Photography

To do that, I set up the tripod out on the deck to get maximum distance, and I set the background ingredients a long way down the bench.
