its hard to tell if the FZ30 is better as conditions change picture to picture and those pics are close.

Now if the FZ40 had a bigger sensor so they are stuffing 14 MP onto it and my assumption is thats like cropping the sensor again but not exactly but I could not defend that statement.

Lets get some bigger sensors in these new models.

The Fz-40 performance here is very good indeed at ISO 800. However, in you dim light restaurant it is hard to speculate on the result without first determining the amount of actual light. All I can say is give it a try.
