I'll do the job myself!!!!

Good for you, dnas! I don't dare to touch a screw on my cameras. The most I've done in terms of messing around with photographic equipment was to remove a focus pin from a Sigma lens. It was a Pentax mount lens but for Ricoh cameras and this little pin would cause the lens to get stuck on a Pentax DSLR body. So, I followed some online instructions and managed to remove the pin successfully. But, I knew if I screwed up, it would not be that big of a deal since I had paid less than $20 for the lens. Well worth the risk.

I've been looking at this thread, now what interests me is that when I brought something similar up with Nikon UK some while back they said to me that if a dealer, either a shop or an online dealer, was advertised on their site via a link then it was safe to buy from them.
Now applying this to Panasonic USA as I just did following their "where to buy" links, you get taken to Amazon and the people you bought from.
So doesnt that mean that Panasonic are therefore culpable and responsible for someone assuming it would be a safe purchase.Or am I missing something here?

I've been repairing camera stuff for a long while....

I have an Olympus E-410 that I converted and use for IR. It's not ideal, as the best IR days are sunny days, and manual focusing with the liveview can be tricky off the LCD. The G1 would be great because it has the EVF.

Well, when I called Panasonic trying to figure out whether the GH1 I bought from Wallstreet Photo (through Amazon) was grey market or not, they told me that in order to make sure I'd get an US unit, I'd have to buy from Amazon itself and not from one of their sellers. I believe that is indeed the safest way to go. What I don't like is the fact that Amazon deals with sellers that sell grey market stuff. I'm still unsure as to whether the unit I bought is grey market or not (not that it matters that much because if I had bought a similar used camera from eBay, I'd most likely not have any warranty anyway). However, if I do find out, I will contact Amazon and give them grief.

With Nikon UK,when I asked them they were emphatic that if I bought from their sites "where to buy" even a web site, then they would be safe to buy from. With Panasonic it may be that as they are involved with selling washing machines, microwaves etc they find it harder to keep tabs??, ought not to be so but looks like it.
Good luck with your quest, I'm sure you will get to the bottom of it.
