Whilst the AVCHD spec is 17Mbps it may peak higher on complex scenes – even so, 30.34Mbps definitely sounds high to me. Very curious indeed.

With all my footage converted for editing, I can't look back old files as the numbers won't make sense now. However, being Halloween, I've got some of the kids antics on camera as 720p AVCHD .mts files. Opening these in VLC on my iMac, I get a bit rate that hovers around the 15k mark – i.e. a bit of headroom on that baseline 17Mbps, but nothing close to the 30.43Mbps you're getting.

If you're definitely 110% sure you have a non-hacked camera, wouldn't it be interesting if Panasonic have actually tweaked the bitrate for late-firmware models.... Mmm.

The bottom line is, if you're getting good looking footage that you're happy with, don't worry too much about the numbers
