Default GH2 - timer - when is auto focus set?

Trying to test my Metz af-1 50 in different conditions (back lit, etc), so I put the GH2 on a tripod, set the timer to 10 seconds, press the shutter button then go stand about 10' in front of the camera.

Keeps focusing on the background. Testing around f/2 so it's real noticeable.

Thought maybe it was the Oly 45mm so I switched to the 20mm, same thing.

It looks like the focus is set when the shutter button is pressed, not when the timer actually takes the image.

Does this sound correct?

Yes, before you depress the shutter all the way, you need to lock your AF on something. Then the focus stays locked on that until the timer takes the image. So if you want to focus on yourself (who is not there yet), then you probably need to prop up a temporary object to focus on, then you replace yourself with that object before the timer goes off.
