Default Software - PT or Panorama Factory

Hi Everyone,

I am looking for a free image stitching software. These are the best two I have found -

http://www.ptgui.com

http://www.panoramafactory.com

Which one would you reccomend be downloading?

Regards,

Richard.

Both of those are shareware, about $50/each. Both are worth having. The Panorama Factory does a good job of stitching simple panos (shot level, good detail to match) using the wizard. PF is not fast, but it is good.

Panorama Tools is free, but pretty much unusable without a GUI front end. PT can deal with stitching jobs that no automagical stitching program like PF can do. Even with a GUI, PT is not easy to learn or to use - it is well worth the effort.

There are several GUIs available for PT. I use PTGgui and like it. I have heard many good things about Max Lyons' PTAssembler (http://www.tawbaware.com/), there is a Windows freeware GUI (http://hugin.sourceforge.net/), at least one for the Mac, and several freeware Linux GUIs. All of that software effort should give an indication of the power of Panorama Tools.

Thanks for the info. So, are there actually any free (and good) ones on the web somewhere?

There might well be some reasonable free automagical stitching software: I think the very early version of Panorama Factory is still free and available. Hugin has a very good base in Panorama Tools. I have no idea how good either of those are in practice since I haven't used them.

There are also "free" stitching programs that come bundled with various cameras and printers.

If you are serious about doing panoramas, you should spend some time looking at Panorama Tools. Get Hugin since it is also free. If Hugin turns out to be to difficult/buggy, put down the money for PTAssembler or PTGui. Difficult and well worth the effort.

I'd also suggest getting one of the automagical stitching programs so you can get some results while you are learning how to use PT+Gui. The simple program will still be usefull later for simple stitching jobs so don't feel that a bit of money will be a waste.
