The type of lens you need depends on how much room you have between you and the subject. Zooms are good, primes specifically a 'normal' (40-60mm range) will have better sharpness and near zero distortion. If you have the ability to step back, I think a lens like this would be a better choice.

I went to a car show just this past weekend and could have used a wider prime or zoom. I made the most of it though and got some full shots even with the crowds of people. All the shots were taken with a DA 40mm f/2.8 Limited lens.

I find that as you say...cars at shows are packed tight together. I usually use the 16mm on my 16-45mm lens. Another reason I like my 16 mm is that the cars are still in fairly good perspective...not too distorted as 16 mm is a more moderate w/a...something around 24 mm on a 1.5 crop factor camera like the Pentax DSLR's.
