Why, under the options tab "Working color management" section.... Whenever I have the Normal Display radio button checked the image is extremely dark? When "disabling color managerment" or "Simulated wide gamut display" is chosen the pic looks normal.

Maybe someone could try it and confirm my observation. I have noticed the same result in Photo Lab as well.

Please forgive my ignorance if it is an obvious answer, I am just concerned that there isn't a software glitch somewhere.

That means either you monitor isn't calibrated correctly or you didn't load a correct icc profile for your monitor. Until you calibrated your monitor, it is worthless to use 'Normal' color management.
