(Pentax K100d, Sigma 70-300mm apo dg macro)

Now that I have an interest in birding, I notice them everywhere. I can be driving, riding my bike, or taking my baby out for a stroll. Out of habit, I'll look up at sky and run my eyes through the tree tops. It's like my eyes and brain are tuned to spotting them. I often have to remind myself to keep my eyes on the road when I'm driving and spot one in the sky, so that I don't get into an accident. This afternoon, I was in my friend's car. We were out to get something to eat.

Me: Woah!
Friend: What?
Me: Dude pull over!
Friend: Huh?!
Me: Just pull over I see something.

My friend pulls his car over to the side of the road.

Friend: What is it?
Me: I'll be right back.
Friend: Where the hell are you going?!

At first I thought it was just a really really big sparrow. What tipped me off was the malar markings. Lucky I had my camera with me.

I stood on the sidewalk and snapped away. It must have noticed me and and flew over to a light pole.

After a bit, it got annoyed and flew off...

I headed back to my friend's car.

Friend: You made me pull over for a freakin bird?!
Me: That's no ordinary bird. That was an American Kestrel.
Friend: Are you nuts?!!!
Me: Heheheheh

LOL! I can relate to that. When I was at the Salton Sea looking at water birds, I happened to look at some power lines. There was a kestrel on them but my two pictures were terrible compared to these (I was shooting into the sun more than you were). These are really nice!

There are lots of them around here in summer (starting to forget what that was like) but hard to get close to in order to get nice shots like you did.
