Hi All,

Went to Crab Tree Nature Center to get some warblers, but saw a Great Egret flying towards the closest lake, so I took a short hike and set up. I used a tripod since ny experience with GBHs tells me that they are usually pretty stationary, and you can die standing there holding the camera up to your eye waiting for them to move so you're not taking the same shot over and over.

As I was shooting, he sometimes came closer, so landscape shots would cut off his feet, so I was struggling with the ball head, trying to reorient the camera to portrait when it dawned on me that the SP 300 has a rotating tripod ring -- Duhhhh! Shows how much I've used tripods with long lenses, and why I generally find the tripod mounts getting in the way. . .

I had to use -2.0 EV to keep from blowing out the highlights. All shots were cropped to 5x7, and PP'd for PF, brightened a little, resized and sharpened. I also smoothed the background on a few as the bokeh was pretty harsh.

This guy, at least, was nothing like the GBHs that I've shot in the past while fishing, as he moved around all the time, and when he went for a fish, it wasn't usually a full body dive, he just splashed his face into the water, then stood back up. Maybe it's because he was going after smaller fish than the GBHs I've seen. . .

This shot I timed just before his face splashed into the water -- looks like he's just taking a sip. . . -- strictly luck though. . .:-)

Got some spread-wing walking shots -- here's the best of them

And actually got some in flight as he took short hops to find a better spot. . .

All in all a great (or at least pretty good) Great Egret day for me. . .

I'll second that. The reflection in No1 is beautiful as is the flight shot.

It is really almost unbelievable that you can capture action shots like these with two teleconverters stacked on that lens. It is magic, pure magic. Great job.

EV-2, huh? That's good to know - I didn't have much luck with -1 and a bird a fair distance from me. I'll have to try -2 next time.

These are really OUTSTANDING! I can't believe how well they came out!
