Hi Ed,

My first guess is that it's a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron. I've seen a few, but they look somewhat like the Green Heron Juveniles, so I'm not 100% sure. I will say that it's got to be one of the two.

BTW, Nice Pic! -- I enjoy photographing Herons the most, I would say.

Looks like a Green Heron - quite a bit smaller than the ones you usually see.

yep, greenbacked heron.. it's the same as the nest i've been posting. i've got another nest of the same bird being incubated as i write this.

Yes, it is a Green-backed Heron, but an immature, whose heavily streaked plumage could lead to confusion with a juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron or even an American Bittern. Size in photographs can bemisleading - with a very few exceptions, a bird must be full grown before it can fly (tail feathers can be shorter, though,which mightmakeit appear smaller).
