Things that go bump and scratch in the night.

This brush tailed possum came down the flue of our wood heater. After spending a day there it eventually came all the way down and finished up in the firebox.

And promptly went to sleep.

They have sharp strong claws for climbing trees they are not to messed with. A local wildlife park staff member came around, on his day off, and eventually encouraged it to leave the heater and into a sack. The possum then got a free trip back to the bush.

Good thing it is the middle of summer.

Middle of summer? Possum's are sleeping here too, for another two months when it gets warm again, or at least above freezing.

Interesting situation. You are right that possums aren't to be messed with - they have some pretty impressive teeth, too. Back when I lived in Texas we had a problem with disappearing cat food (we had some barn cats). I couldn't figure out what was eating it until one night I went out to check on a foaling mare and found a possum in our feed room. It didn't back off when it saw me - just froze and showed his teeth. There was no way I was going to try to shoe it away.
