I noticed something strange while comparing DNG and PEF performance. When I set my K20D to DNG, the camera reports that my 4GB card can hold 166 DNGs. When switching to PEF, the camera only ups the storage count to 167 PEFs.

What the heck? I took 2 shots with the lens cap on, one in DNG, and one in PEF. The PEF file was at least half as large as the DNG file. Why, then, do I only gain 1 photo with PEF?

Take two of the same scene with the lens cap OFF and see what happens. They may simply have responded differently to the lack of an image.

Never could figure out why people want to take pictures of their lens cap for anyway.

From what I understand, the PEF is compressed while the DNG isn't. I think the reason they only show one more picture is that Pentax erred on the side of caution. The number of shots (especially for an empty card) is an approximation anyway. It all depends on your subjects, too.

I get far more images using PEF than I do using DNG on the same size card!
