Thanks to all for your answers. I have decided the beep really is not necessary for the work I do with my camera. BTW, the owl is lovely. A screech owl lives near me. On summer nights I hear it call, but I have never seen it.

Today a Northern Flicker was feeding at my station. A starling tried to chase the bigger bird of. A scuffle ensued, and the starling left in a hurry, leaving a few feathers behind. It would have made a great video.

Tom, that is a great owl shot and a great story. At first I thought you must be pulling our legs. Now a shot of the photographer battling a raptor to save his camera would probably be a prize winner!

I have found some birds intrigued by the beep and it probably keeps them around a little longer out of curiosity!

Making squeaking sounds has been a favorite technique for attracting small birds out of the bushes for a long time, but for owls that hunt by sound it has its hazards. Still, Great Grays (the largest owls in North America) are rare everywhere - they inhabit boreal forests in the North, and mountain forests further south - a guaranteed way to attract one would be worth the risk! Having the camera squeak rather than doing it yourself so that the owl attacks the camera rather than the observer is much safer. :whack:

Tom, you have had an experience worth retelling for years! How about posting some of the other pictures?
