It is well to educate children about the dangers - seen and unseen - around them. They are in everyone's garage and outside water heater closets - never grope in hidden places that you cannot see into! Their bites are seldom fatal but the bite is unpleasant at the very least. And the coloration varies - all do not have a complete hourglass or even have one at all. And there is also an otherwise similar Brown Widow - less common and not as potent, but still dangerous. I don't hunt for them outside the house, and I tolerate some spiders inside inside our living spaces, but not these. It is hard on similar spiders that only look like Widows, but better safe than sorry.
