Lou - MF isn't always a disadvantage for shooting birds, though the A*300's maximum distance before it goes to infinity is WAY out there compared to most lenses. If you can pre-focus it's better because then you don't have to worry about the camera losing focus if the bird leaves the focus point, something I struggled with the first time I tried shooting birds with the DA 55-300 and the K20.
