Default Hummingbird Paradise (?) with the FA* 250-600/5.6

Obviously I say the subject of this post with a bit of tongue in cheek, but I’ve never seen the quantity of hummingbirds anywhere else in our region.

Even the hummingbird feeder manufacturer staff couldn’t believe the numbers when I spoke about it. Normally seven (7) 32 oz. Feeders are emptied by the hummingbirds on a daily basis. That's a lot of sugar water... The numbers have tapered off just a bit after the very hot, humid weather, but I can still see up to 15-20 birds at a time - normally saw 25-30 during the hottest part of the summer. This is the garden I’ve always wanted to attract these little aerial acrobats is well established and the plant choices have not disappointed either!

All images have some cropping, but are never smaller than 2450 - 2500 pixels on the long side, since most subject shots were approx. 15 - 17 feet away @ 600mm. I intentionally setup a bit further away to ensure that they'd perch more often. Eventually I'll get in a bit closer, but that's where having a zoom is incredibly useful, since the FOV @ 600mm is very small.

Observation Post:

I plan to devote a fair bit of time whenever possible in the coming weeks to photographing them, since they'll be departing by around mid-October unless the warmer weather continues past that time frame.

I hope you enjoy this series - more to come!

Hi Marc,

There were quite a few also at the Nature Center when I went there last week. The weather's taken a much cooler turn here from constant 80's and 90's during the day to 70's, and I think they are staging at what they've found to be reliable feeding points in preparation for a final gorging before heading south. I hope the extra warm temps haven't thrown their seasonal sense off. . .

I need to get my car worked on -- I hate having to rely on repair shops to do the most mundane service to new cars -- I just don't have a clue how to do anything on a car anymore. . . otherwise I'd be hanging out at the Nature Center just about all day.

Some great shots! I really like the ones with the ruby flecks. I've seen this on occasion, but only one or two feathers on the sides of their throats. . .

These birds are just amazing .. especially to people who have never seen them in real life .... and the fact that they have little fear of humans just them all the more entrancing, like little flying jewels.

I checked out your website after seeing the hummer in your last thread. Fantastic - and not just the hummingbirds - there are many wonderful sets on there. I wish you all the best with selling more shots and hope you keep posting on here because I'm sure we all love to see your work.

I really want one of those lenses, so much faster and sharper than my old F 100-300mm f4.5-5.6. Some great shots here.

Such awesome shots! I just wish I were able to join you this fall in Utah or Arizona (sigh!). Maybe next year I can swing it. In the meantime, I'll just enjoy all of your shots.
