Default Parting with my Pentax Gear

I have spent the better part of my life in photography enjoying Pentax gear (MX, ZX-7, ZX-L, DL, K20D and K10D, Optio 555). However, I need to admit that for the past 18 months, I've been two timing with Nikon. For a while it was the best of both worlds: Pentax's warm color tones (especially for portraits) and Nikon's lightning fast AF, low noise/high ISO and ultra sharp images (sorry, but I am a pixel peeper). Unfortunately, in order to contine funding my second line I've had to part with my Pentax gear. This is part of the reason that I have not been posting very many images on this forum. My last item (K10D) sold today.

Don't pelt me for abandoning Pentax! I still believe that the gear and the glass offer some unique image characteristics that I've not been able to find in brand N. And that I will miss. Recently, I've been doing a lot of aviation photography, and the Nikon gear really meets my need in terms of AF speed and sharpness.

I still plan to hang out in the Pentax forum and stay in touch with all of you. Who knows, if fortune smiles on me, I may return to my Pentax roots even in some small way (say a K-R???). I will miss contributing images to the various threads here.

Wow... I don't know what to say, Jehan.
I'm sad to see hear you won't be contributing any more, I really enjoyed your photos and you contributions to this forum. But, I understand you have to do what's best for you and if Pentax can't fill those needs... well, you know.
Sure hope you hang out here as much as you can and continue to give us your input on photos and whatever.
Chere's, my friend!

Life's a breeze on a Goldwing...

It's a difficult decision.

I've had Pentax since the late 60's. Twice I almost went to the other side.

Around 1974 I seriously toyed with the idea of getting a Nikon F Photomic. Old stock, new in box.

Instead I bought a Pentax ES 11.

In 2007 I vacillated between a Canon 30D, Nikon D200 and a Pentax K10D.

The thing that swung me, was that I had the Pentax 35-105 A Macro zoom. Wonderful lens...tack sharp and the weather sealing of the K10D and for it's time, very modern.

Before the K10D, there weren't any digital Pentax DSLR's that appealed to me.

I generally prefer wide angles...taking pictures of vintage cars, old trucks, old motorcycles.

Pentax is very strong in wide angle lens. The 12-24mm, is as Pop Photography says the 12-24 is tops in it's class. I've been very happy with the performance and the Pentax primes....50mm F 1.4, limited series are great.

So for me, Pentax does the job.

But Pentax I admit is weak on the telephoto side. The DA 200, 300, 55-300 are great.....but Pentax needs to bring out a new 400mm prime, f 5.6 or F 4 would be nice.

Pentax used to have some very fine telephotos, but I would like to buy new, not used. Just me.

I know in your case, you're quite an accomplished photographer of airplanes and your photo needs, are fast AF and telephoto's beyond 300 mm.

I don't know how the K5 compares to the D300s or the D700 in AF, but I do understand you need to move.

I also understand the difficulty in maintaining two systems. I've done that since '84. Pentax SLR / DSLR and Mamiya (film) Medium format system. The Mamiya is a 6 X 6, bought it new....220 Pro F TLR, with 80 normal , 55mm wide angle and 180mm telephoto. Plus a lot of Mamiya accessories.

Then of course there was...still is (actually for the Mamiya and Leica) my long time carry around camera in the film days...my '52 Leica 11F with it's collapsible 50mm Elmar.

It's expensive and as a family man...it required some juggling.

I do hope you continue to be part of the Pentax forum, as you make a strong contribution.

I know I'm not adverse to looking at Nikon produced pictures.

Well Jehan,

Hate to see you leave the "Cult"

I do understand your reasons.

Pentax has vastly improved their AF and other issues. but, I'm afraid, there is still a lag.

Since I've started my portraiture and Glam work, I've wondered if I might be better served with FF gear.

The thing that keeps me hanging onto Pentax is the in body shake reduction.

IS, or VR, lens are prohibitively expensive.

Anyway, best of luck with your move and don't be a stranger.

Canon 60D, EF 50 f/1.8 II, EF 85 f/1.8 EF-S 10-18 f/4.5 - 5.6, EF-S 18-135 f/3.5 - 5.6, EF 24-105 f/4L, 430 EX II

Pentax K1000, A50 f/1.7, M135 f/3.5, A70-210 F/4

All the best to you with that decision!

If that helps you - I think with your photography needs choosing Canon or Nikon is what most people would do. I hope we'll see some great images in the future here!

Some black tape with PENTAX in white letters placed over "NIKON". Problem solved.
