Default Purple Gallinule Fight

I have not observed this before. The Gallinule has feet with very long toes allowing it to spread out its' weight and walk on floating water plants. How would you expect a bird like this to fight. Yes the feet are prominent, what do you think of the Head Lock? This was in Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Boynton Beach, Florida

Ed, those photos should be published in National Geographic! They are stunning images!

The last three especially are just superb ! Was this a territorial or mating rights battle ?

Amazing shots of some very strange birds. I've never seen feet like that before. They sure use them well to defend themselves.

What a wonderful series! I'd be interested in knowing whether it was mating or territorial or ??? They are definitely unhappy with each other, use their feet better than I had expected.

I know you are in Florida, so are you sure this isn't the Tallahassee Swamp? The legislature just concluded its 60-day session, and has been called back for a special (reapportionment) session. This fight certainly would fit into that sort of territorial bickering.

(Actually, I must confess to being a political scientist, so it is all very interesting.)

Great shots. I have seen Coots doing the same thing - it runs in the family!
