Default What bird is this?

None of these pictures are very good - they are fairly heavily cropped and they were taken with the DA300 plus 1.7 AFA hand-held. I left my field guide at home (again) and I'd really like to know what they are. I'm assuming that they will be easy to identify for anyone who knows birds as I thought the white stripe at the base of the tail very distinctive.

Whatever it is, it's common as I saw more than two (I think). They were soaring over a field in an agricultural/wildlife preserve area near the Salton Sea (which for those not familiar with California, is an inland salt-water lake). I'm fairly certain they are not red-tailed hawks, but I also wonder if they are hawks at all.

At least I can identify the OOF Great Egret in the background - at the time I was taking these pictures I didn't even notice it.

Sorry about the selection of lousy pictures, conditions weren't that great and I'm not very practiced with shooting birds in one place, much less shooting anything that's moving. I didn't have the camera set up properly to handle something like this.

I'll do another thread that has some better bird photos that I took here.

I've done some more research and yes, I do believe it's a Northern Harrier. Now all I have to do is to identify what I originally thought was some sort of sparrow, but I can't seem to pick it out of what I see on-line.
