There are cheap ($40 to $60) flash units on eBay such as the "Phoenix ZBIS-92P " and a Vivitar and others that are advertised as being fully compatible with the *ist DS. Is there any truth to this, I guess I doubt it.

yes, some are worth it. i got a vivitar 550 for a total of $10 delivered. it's a pentax dedicated flash and works TTL. it's a lot smaller than my 400ftz and is good to about 40 feet.. it's also got pins to be dedicated to oly and minolta.
just be sure it's dedicated to pentax. if it's not stated ask the vendor.
