One item omitted from Steve's review is the actual color depth available from cameras. I bought a Pentax 550. The hardware specs were 13 bits for each color (RGB). However the formats used to transfer the photos were limited to 8 bits per color. For JPEG this is a limitation of the standard but for TIF files the full color depth is possible; yet Pentax choose to limit the depth to 8 bits. The effect of this is to provide a more limited dynamic range than would appear to be available from the specs.
