Default Pseudo-HDR question

I've been playing with my own program to produce pseudo-HDR from single JPEGS (in another thread). Below is one I just created and I've got a couple of more aesthetic questions.

Original on left, automatically processed on right:

Any comments welcome but I'm specifically wondering about the shadowed faces of the building. By brightening them up and picking out the detail I think it flattens the image . How do you find the right balance between bringing hidden details out of the deep shadows without losing the sense of depth that those shadows provide?

For me, Ive never had a problem with any flattening. These are two dimensional pics so I dont worry about it.
