Went out shooting today at a local lake to try to capture some fall color. I'm not a big landscape photographer, but am looking to expand my horizons beyond sports shooting. Any tips would be helpful. I think the image is a bit soft... I didn't have my tripod with me. Poor planning

its a bit soft... its also a bit overexposed... and the foreground is lacking in some interest.. that is the biggest thing in landscapes, composing for interesting foreground as well as interest in the rest of the shot... your second attempt was an improvement though!!

keep shooting, your landscapes will improve... you will also improve by just viewing other good landscapes, so buy a copy of outdoor photographer or find a landscape photo forum.. you will soon learn why certain comps work and get the basics in no time..
