Default Which color printers are you using?

I've been using an HP Deskjet 882C color printer for years and now want a better quality print. I use the printer to print full color jewel case inserts for a CD I sell. The inserts are Memorex and heavy weight. Packaging doesn't mention paper weight. Insert sheets are 8.5 x 11. Will accommodate inkjet or laser printer.

The HP DESKJET 5550 Color ($200-ish) has been recommended, but I'm open to suggestions around $400 max. I have a laser B&W printer.

Appreciate input. Thank you.

Read Steve's review on the Canon i950
It makes great quality prints and it's fast.

Rich, I took a look at Steve's review of the i950 and then another lengthy review (review conclusion linked below). It certainly looks to be a terrific printer. However, the biggest 'con' of all reviews ... the inks are expensive.

Ink life: Cyan: 750 pages, Magenta: 620 pages, Yellow: 460 pages, Photo Cyan: 340 pages, Photo Magenta: 260 pages.

I've hunted around and the lowest price I found for each color is $55. Wow! However, it does come with inks, so it would (hopefully) be a while before they would need replacing.

New printers come with half filled ink cartridges. The real money to inkjet printer is sell of the ink cartridges.

In the case of the Canon, I just replaced my S800 (predecessor to the i950) with an i9100. Both printers use the exact same inks as the i950.

During the time that I have had my S800 (1.5 years), I have replaces all my tanks twice (three sets all together). My i9100 and my S800 came with completely full ink tanks; the tanks are clear plastic so you can see exactly how much there is. But I am not too worried about how long they will last me. Until this week, my S800 had printed 30 5x7, 30 8x10, and 90 or so 4x6 total.

I will note that on the Canon's that use the 6 inks, you will tend to run out of the yellow, photo cyan, and photo magenta far sooner than the magenta and cyan if you do alot of prints with people as the focus because of the skintones and clothing not being true red, blue, etc.

At most places, each individual tank is 11.95, so about 72 for a full set. But again you only replace what you need at a time. I have seen at Dell.com the tanks for 9.40 each, and alot of times, orders of over $50 have free shipping. Also look at buy.com

dcrawley, appreciate that input. I've just ordered a Canon i950 from newegg.com.

Thank you, Rich, for the assistance. I missed an eBay auction for a new one by 18 second. However, Newegg have them for $229 + $10 S&H, which is a better price than the eBay auction.

If this printer is half as good as the reviews indicate, I will be most chuffed. (^J^)

Newegg. The canon i950 is way down the page.

Default okay!!

Newegg is one the best online places I've used. They have a very high rating.

I've got some cheapo tanks from http://www.voltexx.com/
at $2.25 each, I had to order some just in case they are good stuff.
I'm still running on the tanks that came with the i950 right now.
But since vaca time is upon us, I'm sure I'll be testing the voltexx tanks soon.
When I see what the prints look like, I'll post on this forum (photo inkjet and may inks & papers).

You will be very happy with the prints from your i950.
Cheers,
