Could anyone explain the point of the Pigmented Black cartridge in the Canon printers? Whether I'm printing photos or not the PGI5 always run down very quickly in comparison to the CLI8BK. I understood that the PGI5 was for use in colour prints yet I can empty the PGI5, the larger of the two, without ever printing a photo or colour document. Any thoughts?

The CLI-8BK cartridge hardly ever gets used unless you happen to print professional grade photo media or duplex material (I think that's right).

The PGI-5BK on the other hand is your main workhorse so it always tends to run out quite quickly...

Hello Websnail glad to see you helping over here beginning to look like a ghost town.

Starting to look like Idle was the only pro answering questions here.

It might help if Steve would turn the lights on. LOL

Guessmost ofthe old timers and pros have moved on to other endeavors or other forums.

I have read several debates on this subject and they end up agreeing with what Websnail said.

Well, there's this pesky thing called "real life", whatever that is ... Besides, what with Idle... quality over quantity.. (not that I'm biased *cough*)

Aye... Nifty-stuff has a lot of discussion on this topic too... As a rule the reason the CLI-8BK doesn't appear in a lot of the later model printers where the predecessor did have it (eg: MP510 vs' MP500), it's because they realised it was a waste of time, putting people off and I think people were calling up support and asking why the printer wasn't using the "other black" when the PGI-5 ran out

Thanks Guys. I guess I misunderstood the intended use of each cartridge.
