Default Difference between print size and media size

I have been looking to purchase a wide-format printer but I keep coming across specs that I don't quite understand.

For example, there are some printers (non-roll feed) that claim they can print 13" x 19" but they also say that their maximum media size is 13" x 44."

Why would the printer accept media larger than it can print?

Also, where does one find 44" paper?

I am sure I am misunderstanding something...

Thanks for helping (and not laughing too loud).

Even if the printer doesn't have roll paper capability, you can cut banner length pieces off the roll and feed them through. There is also a lot of fan-fold paper still around, which people use for birthday banners, etc. and this gives them a way to use it up.
