Default Banding problem with Epson Photo R200

My printer has started printing photos with noticeable fine banding across the entire image. It looks like I am viewing the picture through a screen door.

Printed the nozzle check and the image looks absolutely perfect. Not one section missing or faint. Tried using the print head alignment utility and it did not help. In fact, all the little squares have serious banding in them so hard to choose one that is better.

So my question is, does this mean that I have a hardware fault or is there anything I can do otherwise? If it is a hardware fault, then I guess it's time to replace the printer because repairing it doesn't make sense when I can get a new one for $100. The R200 is about five years old. Maybe that's as long as they can be expected to last? Would appreciate any advice before I dump it.
